My Morning Jacket leaked; this is maybe not a good thing

April 21, 2008

The new My Morning Jacket leaked and it’s pretty boring.

And it’s pretty awful at points. Full marks if you can tell me what in the hell is going on with “Highly Suspicious” besides an awkward aping of Prince, but done at the level of a college frat band. The title track is pretty neat save for the Phish breakdown in the middle. “Sec Walkin'” has some mega backup vocals (like, um, the Bee Gees) that would seem like pure AM gold if they didn’t seem so damn intentional and forced and thus laughable. There’s a quality rocker in “Aluminum Park,” for all those that love your music rockin’, but yeah — the word “interweb” is used in a verse of a song.

Some optimists among you might call it a “grower.” Maybe it is. But it’s going to take a lot of love to want to give it the time. I didn’t know what to expect after Z (maybe we should’ve expected nothing, seeing as it was called Z), but the title of that album now almost seems prophetic: where the hell would this band go next? There was no logical “next step” and, as far as I can tell, with whatever step they’ve taken here, they’ve stumbled pretty hard.

Too bad.
