About bloody time

Jose Saramago’s Blindness is a book so astoundingly awesome I’m terrified that any adaptation will just ruin it. Nonetheless, I’m excited to see how this one ends up on the big screen. It’s got Julianne Moore, who seems fit for the part after Children of Men, Danny Glover (!), and Sandra Oh (waa waa). And instead of being in some unnamed town in S. America as the book was, I’m guessing this one will be in NYC. The good thing is that the book doesn’t lend itself to Cloverfield or I Am Legend style CGI, just psychological tension. But will it stay that way? Please God, make it so. I am confident in the direction of Fernando Merielles, who will be at the helm here — he did City of God, which is to movies what this book is to books.

Comes out September 19.
